Go 4 Fun

Lismore & District Women's Health Centre has received funding from North Coast area Health Service for an exciting community based project to help families with children who are aged 7 -13 years and their parents who are overweight or obese.  The project uses a program, formerly known as MEND which has had great success in the UK.  Go4Fun is also being conducted in Coffs Harbour by the Coffs Harbour Women's Health Centre and in Nambucca by the Family Support Service.

With an emphasis on practical fun learning, the program is designed to deliver sustained improvements in families' diets, fitness levels and overall health.  By following the principles, participants will lose weight naturally and build a foundation for health living.  The program is free and is currently running in Goonellabah and in 2011 will be run in other locations.

The program runs for 10 weeks alongside the school term and is delivered twice a week for two hours - the first hour consisting of interactive discussions and activities about nutrition and behaviour change.  With the second hour alternating between land and water games based exercise.  Go4Fun encourages a family approach and as such a parent or carer must attend all sessions with the child.  Go4Fun is completely free for children and families to attend and these sessions are run after school.  Go4Fun is not a diet and does not encourage rapid weight loss in children, rather it is about empowerment - putting the child at the centre of a range of ways to make healthy lifestyle changes in terms of physical activity, food, self confidence and personal development.  By following the Go4Fun principles, participants will lose weight naturally and thereby build a foundation for healthy living - for life.

The next Go4Fun program begins on 1st February 2011 at the Goonellabah Sport and Recreation Centre and 31st January at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreational Centre.  Anyone who believes their family would benefit is encouraged to contact the Lismore & District Women's Health Centre:
