Counselling

Our counselling services are delivered by staff who work from a holistic feminist perspective which means they are committed to:

  • Empowering women
  • Providing access to information, resources and a holistic approach to health
  • Accepting and supporting diversity and individual differences in sexuality, religion, ability, class, etc.
  • Being aware of the particular effects of gender and its impact on women's lives

Generalist Counselling
This service is offered by Christina Henry to help with a broad range of health concerns including:

  • Depression, anxiety and mental health
  • Grief and loss
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual assault
  • Relationship and family difficulties
  • Drug and alcohol issues
  • Stress management, self-esteem and spiritual well being

Eating Disorders Counselling
Once a person has had an assessment with the Northern Rivers Eating Disorders Service, they may be referred for counselling with the centre's generalist counsellor, who is an eating disorder specialist. She can provide support, information and therapeutic exploration of the patterns and problems involved, with a view to making wanted changes.

Lesbian Counselling Service
This counselling service is provided by Susan Joyce in partnership with the Northern Rivers ACON Lesbian Health Project on Mondays.

It is for lesbian, queer and bisexual women of all ages and provides information, referrals, skills building and support with health care and concerns including:

  • Discrimination issues and coming out processes
  • Identity issues and sexuality
  • Relationship and parenting
  • Mental health issues



Therapeutic approaches used in counselling services include:

 

Regular groups are scheduled by the counsellors each quarter currently with a focus on managing and lifting depression and managing stress and emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

The centre only employs qualified practitioners who are highly trained in key areas of women's health.
